El Yunque waterfall

Exploring El Yunque with Kids

El Yunque National Forest is a true tropical gem and the only rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. When visiting Puerto Rico with your family, this lush paradise offers unforgettable experiences that balance adventure with safety for children of all ages.

IMPORTANT: Always check for closures before your visit. Hurricane Maria damage has led to ongoing restoration work, and trail accessibility may change.

Planning Your Family-Friendly Rainforest Experience

The Visitor Center

The El Portal Visitor Center opens later than the main park (times vary seasonally) and requires a separate admission fee. While it offers educational exhibits, a short film, and dining options, we chose to skip it during our visit. The fee applies only to adults—children enter free—making it a potential rest stop if your little explorers need a break from the elements.

The Information Booth: Your First Essential Stop

Don’t overlook this small but crucial resource! The information booth provides maps and up-to-date trail conditions, eliminating any need to wait for the Visitor Center to open. Snap a quick photo of the trail map here to guide your adventure.

Kid-Approved Trails

Angelito Trail: Perfect for Young Explorers

Located just an 8-minute drive from the Visitor Center, this family-friendly trail proved ideal for our 4-year-old and 8-year-old. The gentle 20-minute hike culminates at a serene river where children can safely splash and play in the refreshing water—a magical rainforest experience they’ll talk about for years.

La Coca Falls: Quick Photo Opportunity

While the La Coca Trail itself is too challenging for young children, don’t miss the roadside viewpoint of the spectacular waterfall. Exercise caution when crossing the road, as the area can get busy with traffic and visitors searching for parking spaces.

Juan Diego: Hidden Gem for Families

This lesser-known spot quickly became our family favorite. The brief hike leads to a natural swimming pool with a cascading waterfall that’s accessible even for children. My kids loved wading in the cool waters, and my more adventurous child even joined me beneath the waterfall’s impressive flow. Just note that parking is limited, and the waterfall’s pressure is quite powerful!

What to Pack for Your Rainforest Adventure

  • Closed-toe water sandals (essential for protecting little feet on slippery surfaces)
  • Lightweight rain jackets (it’s called a rainforest for a reason!)
  • Quick-dry towels (can be left in the car until needed)
  • Waterproof phone case (for capturing memories without worry)
  • Snacks and water bottles (hungry explorers are cranky explorers)
  • Sunscreen and Bug spray

El Yunque offers a rare opportunity to immerse your children in one of the world’s most fascinating ecosystems while creating unforgettable family memories. With some basic preparation, even young children can safely experience the magic of a true rainforest adventure.
